![]() Alderman Smith Introduces Elephant LegislationIn response to information about the cruel treatment of elephants by trainers, Alderman Mary Ann Smith has introduced legislation that would outlaw the use of disciplinary methods that inflict pain and/or cause injury to the animal. An undercover video produced by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) depicts such treatment. This video, which is graphic, contains links to other research on elephant cruelty. Alderman Smith introduced the legislation because, she says, "Cruelty begets cruelty. These elephants are subject to inhumane treatment so they can become entertainment for other people. Just because this might not be everybody's priority doesn't mean it isn't important." Cities in more than 30 states prohibit circuses, wild animal performances, specific acts such as bear wrestling and/or other performance methods that cause pain, discomfort and suffering to animals in order to protect their citizens and the animals from harm. The Chicago legislations pecifically prohibits the deprivation of food, water or rest; the use of an ankus, bullhook, electric prod or shocking device, or the use of a baseball bat or axe handle. In addition, animals could not be chained except for medical procedures. [Return to Top] |
