Ward Report

Dear Neighbors,

I am constantly impressed by what we do and what we accomplish as a community. Although there may be differences of opinion on specifics, we – our community organizations, block clubs, chambers of commerce, development corporations, ethnic organizations – come together for our common good.

Over the past year alone, we:

  • Planned and received City Council approval for the rezoning of Sheridan Road and Broadway.

  • Approved an affordable housing set-aside program.

  • Completed a new campus park at Goudy School, renovated Senn Park and Cochran playlot and began renovation of Cedar and Bromann playlots.

  • Installed police cameras at Winthrop and Argyle, Winthrop and Thorndale, Thorndale and Glenwood, and Winthrop and Winona; additional cameras will be installed this year at critical intersections and near schools to help maintain our record as one of the safest Wards in the City.

  • Tested alternative snow-melting materials and established the largest car-sharing program in the City as part of our on-going effort to improve the environment.

  • Continued our efforts to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow including Installing a new traffic light at Broadway and Glenlake.

  • Completed a market study for the Clark Street business district and assisted businesses that are looking to locate in our Ward.

All of our schools showed substantial improvement; residential and commercial development continues with major projects in progress in all sections of the Ward, and our process for reviewing zoning and development proposals remains a model for all Chicago.

But while we have accomplished much, there is still more we want to do. I look forward to working with you on the issues we all care so deeply about over the coming years.

Regards,

Mary Ann Smith
Alderman
